Do you know this flower?

What is the beautiful plant on the Pinelands Garden Club banner? It is the pink lady's slipper, a wild orchid native to the NJ Pine Barrens and several other areas in the eastern half of the US. In some states, its population has been greatly decreased. Its scientific name “Cypripedium acaule” is derived from the Latin for “shoe of Venus”. The photo on the right was taken in a Medford gardener's backyard.

The NJ Pine Barrens has several rare plants including bog asphodel and Pickering’s morning glory which are found nowhere else on earth. Other rare species include the Pine Barrens gentian, swamp pink lily, false asphodel, and rare orchids such as the yellow fringed orchid, crested yellow orchid, and dragon’s mouth orchid.
